Today we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birthday. A man who made his mark and left a legacy that has changed the world!
As I was preparing to take a group through a SolSession in my Astrology group, I noticed something interesting. Today the Sun moved into the sign of Aquarius, which has a reputation for being somewhat contradictory and rebellious as well as a leader in social change. So I wanted to see where Aquarius would show up in MLK Jr.’s Natal Chart.
I found his birth information from good ol’ Google.

I pulled up his birth chart and started looking for 3 things. Uranus, Aquarius, & 11th house. These three components of his chart would play a part in how he was drawn to become the rebel with a cause.

First, I noticed that Aquarius IS in his 10th house of Reputation. So there will be some kind of rebellion against a personal or social injustice. But notice how Capricorn is the sign on the cusp of his 10th house, which in my perspective shows that his method of rebellion would be a peaceful one because he identifies with respect for authority and structure. He is also a Capricorn Sun, in the 9th house. Even a small glance at his history, you can see how much of his life was about obtaining higher education.
“A gifted student, King attended segregated public schools and at the age of 15 was admitted to Morehouse College, the alma mater of both his father and maternal grandfather, where he studied medicine and law.
Although he had not intended to follow in his father’s footsteps by joining the ministry, he changed his mind under the mentorship of Morehouse’s president, Dr. Benjamin Mays, an influential theologian and outspoken advocate for racial equality. After graduating in 1948, King entered Crozer Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania, where he earned a Bachelor of Divinity degree, won a prestigious fellowship and was elected president of his predominantly white senior class.
King then enrolled in a graduate program at Boston University, completing his coursework in 1953 and earning a doctorate in systematic theology two years later. “

So we know he identifies (Sun) with Theology (9th house) and Authority (Capricorn). But what might contribute to his becoming a face, leader, and voice for Civil Rights?
Think of all the groups he helped bring together in a common cause. This coming together of groups is precisely the energy of the 11th house. But the Pisces sign in that house is “INTERCEPTED” meaning that it will require a little more for him to access that energy than most people.
This is where we look to Uranus. Its position on the chart will help unlock the door to the groups in the 11th house, allowing him to have full impact of the Aquarius energy in its native house. Uranus’ placement is in the 12th house in an Aries sign. I view this as his intense (Aries) spiritual connection with God (12th house) will help him know how to proceed in making the kind of impact required for lasting change.
The pivot he made in his choice to study theology was an important factor in his being able to Nurture (Moon & Ceres) and feel valued (Venus) in his helping of people on a spiritual path (Pisces).
Now, I’m not an expert on the Civil Rights movement, but this chart feels like his purpose in leading the rebellion wasn’t just physical rights, but to be to allow people to be seen for WHO they are, not the color of their skin. It was a spiritual mission as much as a civil rights one. He inspired congregation after congregation to join the movement.
The March on Washinton for Jobs and Freedom in August 1963 was a gathering focused on bringing to light the injustices their people endured at the hands of police and local governments both physically and economically. Capricorn is the energy that very much influences government and authority figures.
If you watch his famous “I Have a Dream” speech, and learn its history, you will see how he was inspired in the message to put aside his notes and focus on just jobs and freedom and began to speak of a broader and bigger spiritual vision which would be in alignment with the Pisces energy in his 11th house.
One key thing to note is that Mercury, the communication planet is in his 10th house of Reputation as well as the Aquarius sign. Meaning his voice would be used to rebel against the injustices of the day.
All Natal Charts have such nuances, that it is often only until AFTER the fact that we are able to see clearly the energy at work guiding all of us to live out our life purposes.
